The Enodia

A forked road at night under a crescent moon and one bright star — the crossroads Hecate has always kept, and the one the Enodia never fully leave behind. Ἐνοδία: “of the road,” “on the way,” “at the path.” Among Hecate’s most ancient and widely attested epithets: she who stands at roads, crossroads, and the places where choices are made about direction.

Also called: the Liminal, the Walker, the Slipping. Common parlance: Crossroads, the Between, the Gate.

The Passage threshold is the one most closely associated with Hecate herself.

You were at a crossroads, literally, figuratively, or in the old sense that has no comfortable modern translation, and something was waiting there. The choice was real. The crossing was real. What you carried back across with you was not the same configuration of self that arrived.

You are the liminal ones. You exist at edges. You read the seams where spaces meet, move through the locked places, find the way when there is no visible way. Not because you are naturally gifted with navigation (you may not be), but because you crossed, and the between-space has not entirely released you. You carry a piece of it. In exchange, it still knows your name.

The Enodia are not all the same kind of traveller. Some crossed from one life to another: a death that didn’t take, a reinvention so complete it constituted a threshold. Some crossed between places in the literal sense; walked through somewhere they shouldn’t have been able to walk, and found what waited on the other side. Some were simply at the wrong crossroads at the wrong moment and made a decision in the second before the paths diverged.

What unites them: they know where the exits are. They always know. Even in rooms with no exits. Especially in rooms with no exits.

Background Options

  • The crossroads found you when you were lost, and what waited there offered guidance. You have been finding paths ever since, for better and for worse, and you are only now starting to understand that the between-space was not being kind.
  • You were running from something when you crossed. The between-space was refuge. Staying was not an option. Now you are never entirely not-running, even in rooms where the doors are locked from the inside.
  • The threshold was a literal one: a doorway, a bridge, a gate. You stepped through. The person who stepped back out was subtly, importantly different, and it took you some time to notice.
  • You were sent. Someone needed a message delivered, a package carried, a person guided through a space that wasn’t safe. What waited at the crossing point had other ideas about what the transaction was.
  • You followed someone you loved through a threshold they could not come back from. You came back. They did not. The between-space knows both of you, and occasionally gets confused about which one it’s speaking to.
  • You have always been better at leaving than arriving. The bargain gave that tendency a name, a cost, and a set of capabilities you are still figuring out how to use.
  • You are from somewhere else. Not in the way people use that phrase. From somewhere that required a passage to reach, and a different passage to leave. The between-space was the only route. It extracted its toll on the way.

Enodia Abilities

You gain all of the following benefits:

  • Able to take two more minor wounds and one more moderate wound
  • Add +2 to Speed Pool
  • Add +2 to Intellect Pool
  • Add +1 Edge in Pool of your choice (Speed recommended)
  • Freely use light and medium weapons
  • Freely use light armor
  • At tier 3 and tier 6, choose an ability from the Sanctuary Genre Abilities list

Read the Threshold: You perceive the nature of any threshold, boundary, or crossing within immediate range: locked doors, warded borders, metaphysical barriers. You automatically know whether a crossing is locked, guarded, or sealed; whether a space has been deliberately closed; and whether a barrier is physical, magical, or something harder to name. You can also sense where a passage wants to exist: the ghost of a door that used to be, the potential for an opening that hasn’t been made yet. Enabler.

Clean Passage (2+ Speed): You pass through one physical or metaphysical barrier, a locked door, a warded threshold, a crowd, a sealed window, without triggering its resistance. You leave no trace of passage you don’t choose to leave. The barrier is unaffected. Using this ability advances the Geas by 1 state. Effort: Each additional level of Effort allows one additional willing person to pass through with you. Action.

Exit Strategy: You always know where the exits are, including exits others don’t notice: crawlspaces, weakened walls, forgotten doors, service passages, ways out that were bricked up decades ago and are thinner now than they look. You gain an asset on any task related to escaping a location, finding a way out, or leading others to safety. At tier 3, this extends to sensing the nearest significant threshold within the surrounding area, even if it’s in a different building or below ground. Enabler.

Enodia Equipment Bundle

A set of picks or a skeleton key (or the equivalent in your context), appropriate clothing that does not announce your arrival, a compass that may or may not point toward north, a map with deliberate blank spaces, something that anchors you to a specific place you can return to, and currency enough for a journey whose length you haven’t determined yet.

Or assemble your own: appropriate clothing, one expensive item, five moderately priced items, six inexpensive items, and currency equivalent to a moderately priced item.

The Geas: The Between-Space Claim

The crossroads wants you back. The Geas tracks displacement.

Trigger: The Geas advances by 1 state when you use Clean Passage, spend a significant scene in a liminal space (a hallway, a stairwell, a doorway, a border, any space whose function is transition rather than occupation), or voluntarily cross a threshold of significance.

State 0 — Anchored: Fully present. The Enodia is entirely here, entirely visible, entirely themselves. No penalties.

State 1 — Slipping: Minor displacement. People occasionally look straight through you, then look again. You gain an asset on stealth tasks, you are slightly not-here in a way that is useful, but sustained social presence becomes harder: tasks requiring others to keep their attention on you are hindered.

State 2 — Adrift: The between-space is pulling. Your voice sounds like it’s coming from slightly the wrong direction. You appear in rooms without people noticing you enter. You can move through any physical barrier without effort, but each time you do, the Geas advances by 1 state. Movement-based tasks are eased by two steps.

State 3 — Claimed: The between-space has you. You vanish from the current scene for a number of rounds equal to 1d6. You are in the between-space, unreachable and unreaching. When you return, you arrive where the path decides, not where you intended. The Geas returns to State 2 after this.

Relief: The Enodia must deliberately anchor themselves to a specific place through sustained, embodied presence. Staying in one room for a full scene without using any passage ability. Completing a task that requires physical attention to one location: cooking, tending, caring, building. Making a deliberate choice not to take a crossing that was available. Each act of deliberate groundedness, choosing to be here rather than between, drops the Geas by 1 state. The between-space accepts this. For now.

Cypher Manifestation Styling

Enodia styling for Cypher Manifestation will be detailed in the Sanctuary Manifestation Guide. Provisional: styling expresses as spatial, threshold-based, and liminal. Effects occur at boundaries. The working happens at the edge of things, not the centre.
